Propensity Scores: Theory

The propensity score is the probability of receiving treatment given observed covariates:

$e(L) = P(A=1 | L)$

Where:

• A is the treatment indicator (1 = treated, 0 = control)
• L represents all measured confounders

Key insight: The propensity score summarizes all confounders into a single number.
