What are Time-Varying Treatments?

Time-varying treatments change or may change over the course of follow-up.

Examples:

  • Medication dose adjusted based on symptoms
  • Continuous treatment with possible discontinuation
  • Sequential treatments (e.g., surgery then chemo)

Why special methods?

  • Treatment at time tt depends on prior outcomes
  • Prior outcomes affect future confounders
  • Standard regression fails
